Angels are among us.
But these “Angels” prefer Harleys over harps and their wings come attached to a human skull.
Area law enforcement has reported members of the notorious biker gang, the Hells Angels, stopping in and passing through Butte-Silver Bow County this week. The outlaw motorcycle club is meeting in Missoula this weekend for its USA Run, which could bring up to 400 members and associates of the gang to the area.
Local police hadn’t reported any problems as of Friday, but admit the infamous gang is a cause for concern.
Montana High Patrol Capt. Gary Becker, who heads the Butte office, said he and his troopers have been keeping a sharp eye on the dozens of Hells Angels who have already passed through.
Though there haven’t been any incidents, Becker said the gang’s troubled history is enough reason for his troopers to be prepared for the worst.
“They (troopers) have to be on their toes,” Becker said. “The potential for violence is always there when dealing with the Hells Angels.” The Hells Angels formed on March 17, 1948, in Fontana/ San Bernardino, Calif., according to the motorcycle club’s Web site. Though the Angels have historically denied they are a criminal organization, the FBI considers the group a gang known for widespread violence, drug dealing and other criminal activity.
Dillon Police Chief John Gutcheck said several packs of Angels spent the night in town last week.
“We had about 30 of them stay overnight, but most just stop and buy gas and drive on through,” Gutcheck said.
About 20 of the “one-percenters,” as they sometimes call themselves, were seen in Butte on Wednesday getting gas at a convenience store at Dewey and Harrison, according to Butte Undersheriff Mark Driscoll.
He said there have been no reports of disturbances involving the Angels in Butte, but he added that police are always a bit leery of them.
“They’re all criminals to some extent,” Driscoll said.
Becker said his troopers have been warned to be extra cautious if they have to make a traffic stop on a Hells Angel. An officer can be quickly outnumbered because they often travel in packs, and they’ve been known to carry firearms and other weapons.
“And some of them just don’t like law enforcement,” Becker added.
